Sharp Shooter Basketball maintains rigorous safety protocols and coaching standards to ensure every player has a positive, protective environment.
Background Checks & Screening
Every coach and volunteer undergoes thorough vetting:
- Federal and state criminal background check
- Sex offender registry verification
- Motor vehicle records check (for those transporting youth)
- Reference checks from previous organizations
- Social media screening
All background checks are renewed annually. Anyone with disqualifying offenses or concerning patterns is immediately removed.
SafeSport Certification
Our coaches complete training through the U.S. Center for SafeSport and equivalent programs that cover:
- Recognition of child abuse and grooming behaviors
- Creating a safe training environment
- Appropriate coach-athlete boundaries
- Mandatory reporting requirements
- Responding to disclosures
All certifications are current and tracked in our system.
Our Coaching Code
Physical Boundaries
- No one-on-one physical contact outside formal training
- Spotting assistance always given with open palms or approved techniques
- No touching of torso, groin, or legs without player consent and parent notification
- High-fives and fist bumps okay; hugs only if player initiates
Communication Standards
- All coach-player communication happens through Sharp Shooter systems or parent-visible channels
- No private text, social media, or phone contact with players
- Team communication always includes parents/guardians
- Coaches maintain professional tone in all interactions
Discipline & Behavior
- No yelling, shaming, or degrading language
- Coaching focuses on effort, improvement, and character—not just results
- Discipline is age-appropriate and educational, never punitive
- Players never excluded from practice or events as punishment
Environment & Facilities
- Locker rooms are supervised with open-door policy
- No one-on-one time in closed spaces
- Multiple adults always present during all activities
- Facilities regularly inspected for safety hazards
Reporting & Response
How to Report Concerns
If you ever have concerns about a coach's behavior or child safety, report it immediately:
Our Response Protocol
- All reports are taken seriously and documented
- Immediate notification to program leadership
- Suspension of accused coach while investigating
- Full cooperation with law enforcement if needed
- Support resources offered to affected players and families
- Transparency with community while respecting privacy
Mandatory Reporting
California law requires us to report suspected child abuse. Our coaches are trained as mandated reporters and will:
- Report to child protective services if abuse is suspected
- Report to law enforcement for certain crimes
- Maintain confidentiality while fulfilling legal obligations
Your child's safety matters more than privacy. We will report concerns even if it means difficult conversations.
Equipment & Facilities Safety
Equipment Standards
- All balls and equipment regularly inspected and replaced
- Courts meet professional standards (flooring, lighting, temperature)
- First aid kit and AED available at every session
- All coaches trained in CPR and first aid
Injury Prevention
- Warm-ups and cool-downs standard for every class
- Age-appropriate drill intensity
- Players can modify drills without shame
- Injuries documented and parents notified immediately
- No pressure to play through pain
